Montmartre was known
as an artists community long before Montparnasse became a center
for writers and artists. Artists such as Toulouse Lautrec and Vincent
Van Gogh lived and worked here. Van Gogh was actually one of the
first painters to realize the importance of Public Relations. Legend
has it that Van Gogh would paint in the street at night with candles
on the brim of his hat to illuminate his canvas. People thought
he was crazy, but they didn't forget him. I wish I had gotten a
night-time picture of myself painting on the laptop, illuminated
by the glow of the PowerBook G3 monitor, candles on the brim of
my hat. It's PR like this that makes you famous.
