This was my first Burns Supper ever, and I'm really grateful that the Scots in attendance didn't hold it against me for that "plague" thing that happened years ago. Any way, our host, or chairperson, for the evening was Ross Carter, a poet and Rabbie Burns scholar. Burns Suppers have a traditional format that has been unchanged since Rabbie's friends started them shortly after his death, at the age of 37, in 1796. The Supper this evening was held at the historic Old Mansion in Frankfort, Kentucky, formerly the Governor's Mansion. Even though the dress was formal with kilts optional, the ambience was, in the Burns spirit, casual and jovial. The casual, jovial spirit is partially due to Rabbie's fondness for Scotch whisky (John Barleycorn). But, if it's good enough for Rabbie, it's plenty good enough for us. |
