title: Bicycle regrets

Next to a new PowerMac G3, the coolest gift I ever got was a new Schwinn bicycle. It just had one gear but it was like having a sports car except it was better than a sports car because it could go places a sports car couldn't go. Even with just one gear it was fast enough to pass an 18-wheeler going downhill on the Lake Charles bridge in south Louisiana. I wonder what that truck driver thought when five one-speed Schwinns overtook him about halfway down the bridge, the bikes vibrating and twisted out of alignment as they reached speeds far beyond anything they should have been capable of. Like Sinatra said, "regrets, I've had a few, but then again too few to mention". But one of them I don't mind mentioning is that I wish I had kept that Schwinn.
